Yin Yoga was originally designed in the 1970s by a martial arts expert, Paulie Zink, to increase flexibility and balance out the 'Yang' energy of strenuous exercise. This practice was further developed by yoga instructors Paul & Suzee Grilley, Sarah Powers, and Bernie Clark, into the practice we know today - a slow, meditative practice, used to enhance flexibility and health by targeting and stretching the fascia, the soft connective tissue found throughout our bodies. With a focus on 'skeletability' (acknowledging no two skeletons are the same), we are to find our own version of each pose, our own optimal stretch adapted to suit our own unique structures. Through long holds and deep stretches using a variety of props, the fascia is stimulated encouraging blood flow and therefore supporting healing and regeneration of tissue. Yin can be challenging both physically and mentally, as the practice encourages us to connect with our bodies, inhabit our inner space as we rest in the stretch, breathe, observing the physical sensations and mental responses.
